Yes, you do. Scissor lifts can be dangerous and can cause accidents leading to personal injuries as well as structural and equipment damage. Current regulations state that all personnel who work with or near scissor lifts must be trained and licenced. There are always risks involved when working at heights, the most common being a fall or ejection from the lift so to ensure the safety of both the operator and surrounding crew, specialised safety training and certification is required to operate a scissor lift in Australia.

Where can I get my licence?

There are multiple registered training organisations Australia wide that offer the course you need to become a certified operator. For scissor lift operators, this normally is the EWP Operator Ticket or Yellow Card as it is more commonly known. This qualification will allow you to operate platforms up to 11 metres in height. If you are looking to operate platforms taller than 11 metres a High Risk Licence is required. At Height 4 Hire we offer in house training for Yellow Card and High Risk Licence. We acknowledge and promote the importance of safely operating access equipment and therefore make it easy to obtain the required licences for machine use. This training is in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OH&S) and the new Work Health and Safety Act (2011). Contact us today for more information.

So what does Scissor Lift training involve?

Training is usually completed within one day, taking up to 8 hours. The course is a combination of practical use and theory and will teach you everything you need to know to operate a scissor lift properly and avoid accidents. You will learn:

  • The fundamentals of operating a scissor lift safely
  • Navigating the lift both indoors around workers and equipment, and outdoors on different terrain
  • Operational checks and equipment inspections
  • Identification of hazards & accident prevention
  • Emergency procedures and shut down

There are no pre- requisite units required to complete this course, however applicants should be 18 years of age or above. Upon successful completion of the course your record of training is processed by the EWPA and you will receive an EWP Operator Licence with the proof of training and your photograph on the card.
